Epoxy garage floor paint in NZ: will it last?
Garage floor paint is the cheapest way to cover a concrete floor, and it can work. Whether it lasts comes down to which product you buy, how you prepare the concrete, and whether you drive on it.
Short answer: on a floor you walk on, a good two-pack epoxy paint over properly prepared concrete can last years. Under cars, most DIY paint jobs start lifting where the tyres sit within one to three years, because the concrete wasn't ground and hot tyres pull the paint up.
One-pack vs two-pack floor paint
One-pack floor paints come ready to use, often labelled "epoxy-modified" or "epoxy-fortified". They're easy to apply but thin, and they're the ones most likely to peel under tyres.
Two-pack epoxy comes as a resin and a hardener you mix together. It cures harder and bonds better, but you have limited working time once it's mixed.
Why painted garage floors peel
- Smooth or dusty concrete gives the paint nothing to grip
- Moisture rising through the slab pushes it off from underneath
- Hot tyres soften thin paint and lift it when you drive off
- Old oil stains stop the paint bonding
- Driving on it before it has fully cured
If you're doing it yourself
- Test for moisture. Tape a square of clear plastic about 45 cm wide to the floor, sealed on all sides, and leave it 24 hours. Condensation under it, or darkened concrete, means the slab is too damp to paint.
- Degrease. Scrub oil stains with a concrete degreaser and rinse well.
- Profile the surface. Hire a floor grinder if you can. Acid etching is the fallback, but it's less reliable.
- Vacuum all the dust, then let the floor dry completely.
- Use a two-pack product and follow the mixing, recoat and cure times on the tin exactly.
- Keep cars off for the full cure time, even if it feels dry sooner.
When paint is the right call
Paint makes sense for a storage area or workshop where you don't park, a rental you'll leave in a year or two, or a tight budget where a fresh look matters more than longevity.
If you park on the floor every day and want to do it once, a ground flake coating will outlast it many times over. See what a coating costs →
Garage floor paint vs flake coating
| DIY garage floor paint | Pro flake coating | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost, double garage | $200 – $600 product | $1,980 – $2,700 |
| Preparation | Clean, sometimes acid etch | Full diamond grind, moisture test |
| Thickness | Thin film | Many times thicker, with flake |
| Under hot tyres | Often lifts | Resists pick-up |
| Typical life | 1–3 years under cars | Many years, re-coatable |
